Larger installations or more planets?

Hey there, I'd like to ask some more seasoned ogamers if it is more feasible trying to bring the planetary infrastructure such as mines and power sources to some high level (paying extreme costs). Or to simply engage on expanding to a large number of planets. If the first, what is the highest building level you've ever managed to get to on to? For example a crystal mine? Or if the latter, then how many planets is realistically possible to maintain (and defend)?
